Doing it Scared!

Fear is a natural element of forward motion.

It’s easy to attend an inspirational event, be surrounded by hundreds of like-minded people and set some challenging and exciting goals. With such inspiration around you how could you fail?

On returning home your goal becomes more challenging because you’re on your own again. The voices of inspiration have been replaced with that one internal solitary voice of fear: ‘Yea…But…’ Your goal suddenly seems bigger and scarier than ever. The mountain is suddenly much steeper to climb and fraught with danger because:

• You’re opening yourself to cynicism and criticism
• You’re putting yourself out there BIG time
• You’re leaping outside of your comfort zone and exposing yourself
• You’re taking some risks that go against your natural instincts to be safe
• You’re going to face roadblocks and challenges along the way

Here’s how one of my clients described their fear of success. She starts with the Possibility of Success:

Reset myself>>Possibility of Success]

Fear is such a powerful emotion and causes us to back track and question our original decision. We begin to wallow in procrastination and we are suffocated by self-doubt and excuses NOT to get started. Hesitancy creeps in as we loop around in our circle of fear making worry and anxiety more intense. Each cycle youreset yourself smaller as your power is dissolved away.

This is where most people stop…Road closed!

They divert to take an easier route, a half-way compromise, or they put their goal (and dreams) back on the shelf. They back down and tread carefully through life avoiding any dis-comfort.

You can break out of this cycle.

Here are some things we know about fear…

Fear is Biological and linked to our fight and flight mechanisms controlled by our Lizard Brain. Our Lizard warning alarm will sound when we step out of our comfort zone, feel uncomfortable or perceive danger ahead. Our brain cannot differentiate whether the threat is physical or mental. This legacy still remains as part of our make-up when our bodies go into red alert.

Fear Exists – Acknowledge this and recognise it as just a natural part of the process of forward motion. Most of the good stuff in life involves taking some risk. Risk brings opportunity to learn and grow. Fear doesn’t mean give up! It’s part of the process of success. Make your unconscious roadblocks conscious and begin to recognise what is coming up for you. You can then develop strategies for dealing with it.

Fear Creates Objections Why You Shouldn’t Do It – “I don’t know how I’m going to get new clients!”Or the voice in your head reminds you only about what you’re giving up: “It means that I’ll not have a company car anymore!” or “I might lose all my savings.” Writing these down and consciously knowing your objections allow you to deal with them. These concerns are usually the triggers of your procrastination. You can challenge these and overcome them.

Fear Creates Memories of the Future – Humans have the amazing ability to create memories of the future in our head that feel real. These are a combination of pictures, sounds or feelings. We imagine what the future outcome is going to be like. You create fantasy of becoming a bag lady on the street and create your own internal movie of your self-fulfilling prophecy of doom of how things might play out. As kids we used to use our imagination to pretend we were a super hero or our favourite characters on TV. We’d act out scenarios believing to be these people. Hmm… Interesting how the adult mind uses this same ability to project so much negativity! The movie in our head isn’t real. Replace those memories of the future with your vision and dreams. Re-align to your goal and view things differently.

Fear Makes the Wall Look Bigger – When we hit a roadblock it’s easy to become mis-aligned. You step out of congruency with your goal. After all it’s scary doing something bigger. So it’s important to check in with your intention every single day. Claim back your power to make things happen. Get back up and re-align to your WHY. Ask yourself: “What have I learnt here?” Then step back in fully – over and over again. Keep going tweaking things that don’t work along the way.

To overcome fear you firstly need to be able to recognise and name it. Remember, fear is just a natural part of the process to success.

It’s Time to ‘Fire’ Your Inner Critic…

Do you have voices in your head? (…I know it’s not just me!)

Our self-doubting critic usually shows up as we’re about to deliver a presentation or when we’re stepping up to do something bigger. Once we stretch out of our comfort zone we become vulnerable to negative self-talk.

Your inner critic sounds so real that it’s easy to believe the voice in your head and before you know it, you’re spiraling in a self-fulfilling prophecy of doom!  In creeps self-doubt, uncertainty as your confidence drains away.

One of my coaching clients, James, asked me to help him to overcome his inner critic who would appear after a presentation or any other situation where he was stepping in and being a leader.

James would find himself replaying a situation over and over dwelling only on the negative aspects of the event or conversation.  Any negativity was magnified and blown out of proportion.  James’ inner critic was ultra-critical of any mistakes. His Inner Critic was a perfectionist who had zero tolerance for imperfection. He was overly protective.

This negativity created extra pressure for James the next time he was in a similar situation. He was tired of this voice and wanted to get away from the constant negativity in his head.

So we decided to ‘Fire’ his Inner Critic…

The quality of your inner dialogue has a huge impact on your actions and results. We all have an Inner Critic and an Inner Coach available to us. It’s almost like having your own internal team in your head!

You get to choose who you want to employ: the Critic or the Coach…

The inner critic is the negative person in your team – holding you back, draining your energy, stealing your confidence and self-worth. They make you play small and always block your path.

If you were an employer the critic would be fired for not being a team player, having a negative attitude and for being a disruptive influence!

This doesn’t serve you at all…

The inner coach is a positive encourager, who can help you step back from the situation to reflect and focus on learning and forward motion. Your inner coach:

  1. Is caring and supportive while giving you permission to take risks.
  2. Is not interested in the criticism from others and pushes this aside.
  3. Helps you to focus clearly on your goals.
  4. Allows flexibility and permission for you to be Imperfectly Perfect.
  5. Helps you to put things into perspective and think objectively.
  6. Challenges your emotional assumptions (that are normally plagued by inaccuracies).
  7. Helps you ask for advice from others without feeling inadequate.
  8. Promotes self-awareness and self-improvement as an adventure and as an opportunity for growth. Learning is part of the journey.
  9. Helps you to build your competence and confidence.

Your inner coach is a high performer, if you decide to listen to him/her. This is the type of inner employee that you need to hire!

Here are five ways to develop your inner coach:

  1. Recognise when your critic tries to take over and make a conscious choice to listen to your coach instead. Try turning the sound down or muting  your critic so you can’t hear them!
  2. Decide to actively listen to your coach instead. We are supportive of others when they are learning, so be a friend to yourself. It’s okay to make mistakes and not be perfect. Learning is about continuous improvement.
  3. Dis-associate yourself from the situation. Imagine you were coaching someone else in the same situation, what would you say to them? How would you support them?
  4. Make time for positive reflection after the event. Ask yourself: What went well? What would I do differently next time? What have I learned? Write down your next step to apply your learning.
  5. Give yourself permission to get it wrong, screw it up and make mistakes. Learning is messy because skills and behaviors can take time to master.

It’s like we all have a critic sitting on one shoulder and a coach sitting on the other whispering in each ear! YOU get to choose which one you want to listen to…

How to Create a WHOLE Learning Experience…

There has been loads of research about the human brain and how it learns. Because of its complexity most theories use metaphors to explain how we learn in an over-simplified way.

If you are a coach, leader or a learning professional knowing this is extremely valuable if you want to create compelling, engaging and effective learning environments.

To make natural learning much more interesting, effective and faster it’s important to use the whole brain.

Your mind and body are inter-connected in a myriad of ways. Therefore, learning happens at a mind, body, emotional and a cellular level… It’s not just confined to your head!

However, education has traditionally taught us to separate the mind and body. Most learning is undertaken by the ‘head’ – rational processes ignoring the senses and our feelings. As we grow, the dis-connection between the mind and body becomes wider. Feelings are pushed down or ignored as these are seen as ‘soft’ and ‘weak.’ We are taught to sit down, stay still and learn!

Not very natural at all!

Many learning environments are created around the head and NOT the whole – even though research has proved that thinking and bodily movement are closely connected in the brain…both enhance learning.

This is known as behaviorism and stimulus and response (carrot and stick) has had a huge impact on learning, especially in the corporate world. It prescribes learning into Personal Development Plans (Personal Fixing Plans as I call them) that doesn’t lead to real sustainable growth.

My favourite brain theory is the Triune Brain proposed by American physician and neuroscientist Paul D. MacLean, because it uses the metaphor of three brains-in-one. Each are inter-connected and inter-linked. All three have specialist functions that relate and interact with each other.

Here’s a quick description of the three brains:

Reptilian or Lizard Brain – Our primitive brain was the first to evolve. It’s mostly responsible for survival and involuntary responses such as your heartbeat and breathing – instinctive and repetitive behavior. Our lizard loves routine and rituals and it instinctively becomes an animal if it perceives a threat.

Limbic System – Or the Mid-brain. This is our social and emotive brain. Responsible for feelings through our senses and is responsible for long-term memory.

Neocortex – Is 75 – 80% of your total brain mass. Its function is essential for problem solving, creativity, planning, language, thought, and movement (it’s 500th of a second slower to respond than your lizard brain!)

…What does it have to do with learning?

Each specialist area subtly interacts and inter-relates in important and complex ways.

Traditionally, most of us are conditioned to learn using our Lizard Brain through rote learning and repetition – learning was done to you. You were a passive participant driven by hierarchy (teacher or Human Resources!). The key motivator was fear of failure with little concern for your thinking or feelings. Feelings were probably seen as a negative weakness that got in the way. It’s easy to create order takers and a command and control culture.

Don’t think… just do!

Individuals lose their ability to make decisions and problem solve because of this hierarchical approach to learning.

So how can these three brains help us to learn?

The Lizard Brain is still important for us in the learning process and we certainly don’t want it to stop because routine and precedent setting is good and positive (we also need to keep breathing right?!).

This is just one part of the learning brain…

The Limbic System has a profound effect on the quality and quantity of your learning through connection with your emotions. Self-awareness and self-management can be profound. It also provides us with a checkpoint for common sense – common sense is not always common practice!

Negative feelings slow learning or even stop it altogether as we retreat to our Lizard Brain for protection to defend ourselves from a perceived threat.

Creating an environment for negative feelings as you train, coach or lead individuals will make them become defensive and compliant, especially if you’re getting them to compare and compete with each other. This is not an effective way for people to learn. You’re triggering their inner lizard. Learning will slow or stop altogether because they down-level into stress and survival.

Creating an environment where positive feelings are experienced helps your learner to relax, open up and Uplevel into their third brain: Neocortex function where thought, problem solving, planning, creativity, and pure learning takes place.

All learning experiences should exercise the Neocortex. This is known as the learning brain! Here where individuals get to think for themselves, recognize any feelings associated with their thinking, create conscious action, and get positive results.

You help others to become leaders of their own learning by holding space for their creativity and imagination, allowing them to create meaning and value by navigating the information instead of writing it down and storing it away for later (later NEVER happens!).

Learning is much more than sitting still and writing notes.

Our brains continue to grow and create new neural pathways into old age. So learning is life!

 

 

How Being ‘Nice’ Can Destroy Your Success in Business.

In many cultures building a strong relationship is a requirement for doing business. This is a natural motivational driver for some where helping people is a priority.

“Bless him! Jack is so nice! He’s such a lovely person…”

…was how people described Jack – a coaching client. Jack was always concerned with maintaining harmony and getting along with people, even if it involved contorting himself to fit in.

Jack was overly nice. He valued people and their feelings more than achieving goals and tasks. He strived to keep people happy and create harmony. This had limited his success in business.

I have to confirm that a friendly approach creates connectivity and builds empathy. It works extremely well if you want to increase morale, improve communication or offer emotional support to someone with personal challenges.

Unfortunately, Jack was a people-pleaser and relied solely on this approach to lead. He was too concerned with keeping things harmonious. His philosophy was:

If people like me, then they’ll want to work with me.

He was always worried about getting along with people. Looking after others was his priority and he’d always move towards people that he perceived needed help.

Being helpful, supportive and focusing on positive relationships is a strength. If this strength is over-played though, it can have a negative effect on relationships leading to poor performance and mediocre results…

Being overly nice contorted Jack’s lens for doing business effectively: He’d lower the price to prospective clients and was always giving his time or services away for free. He was seen as ‘a soft touch.’ He’d not give feedback to his staff in fear of upsetting them. He’d spend time worrying about whether people liked him or not. Work took second place to his feelings.

Being ‘nice’ takes a lot of energy.

Here’s how to recognize when being nice is too much…

1. You’re too concerned about keeping harmony – You shy away from confrontation or difficult conversations. You’re always stepping in to keep things sweet and cool. Looking after others is your sole priority.

2. You avoid giving feedback – You neglect to give honest and open feedback to your clients and staff. They can’t improve because you keep the information to yourself. You focus on giving praise and rarely offer advice on how to improve. Others may feel that mediocrity is tolerated.

3. You worry what people think of you You are more concerned about getting along with people, sometimes to the detriment of the task in hand! Task accomplishment becomes a potential blindside. You worry about what people might/might not be thinking about you. This becomes your priority and distorts your thinking. You constantly replay in your mind whether they like you or not maybe you upset them when you said…

4. You’re too friendly in a crisis – Instead of taking the lead and providing clarity and direction, you’re too focused on keeping everyone happy and maintaining the welfare of others. You play down the situation and people are left to figure it out for themselves. Others may see you as a soft, wasting time, unfocused, and thinking too much about people when it’s not the key issue here.

5. If you like me, then you’ll buy from me – You falsely believe that if someone likes you then they’ll buy from you. So you contort yourself to be nice in the hope that they will step forward to work with you. You give things away (time, energy, services) in the hope that they will sign up or come onboard with your idea. This is playing small because you constantly underplay your value. They may like you, but they won’t buy if they can’t see the real value you are hiding from them.

Business isn’t about being nice – it’s about serving people at the highest level and helping them to achieve the results that they want.

It’s not about getting people to like you… (the fact is that some people won’t like you!)

Having empathy is different from being nice. Empathy enables you to care for the whole person: their feelings and their goals. You serve others best by moving between focusing on the value of the relationship and the value of the task. Moving towards the goal involving people along the way.

Be yourself, stand in your power and lead by balancing the emotional needs of others through task accomplishment and direction.

Balance is the key…

 

Unknown Possibility – Exploring the Positive Side of Uncertainty…

Let’s face it… uncertainty can be scary. It makes us want to run away, the last thing we want to do is face it and own it.

After all, why would you want to own something that is terrifying, makes you feel scared and fills your head with doubt and voices of doom? You’d rather hide and just hope that is goes away or run away from it as fast as you can! RUN!

Not knowing is like a monster that is lurking in the shadows. You see it out of the corner of your eye, you can’t quite focus on it, but you know it’s there. The intensity of leaning in and moving towards something when you don’t know the outcome fills you with anxiety, doubt and fear. This monster could strip you of everything and you’d be left to pick up the pieces of your life afterwards. It feeds your lizard brain with negative thoughts…

I remember being engulfed with the shroud of uncertainty while taking exams at school: Would I be able to answer the questions? What if I didn’t get the grades I wanted? What if I forgot everything once I took my seat in the exam room? I hated the persistent pain of my anxiety of having to lean into the unknown and get through it all.

Life is a bit like reading a good book that you don’t want to put down. You want to know how it ends before you’ve finished reading it! However, the reality is that if you knew the ending first, then you’d probably not enjoy reading the rest of the book or you might lose interest and not even finish reading it!

Humans always want to know the answer – we look for the facts and want to mitigate all the risks beforehand. For some of us the discomfort of not knowing is too much, instead we stay safe, stagnate and watch other people take the risks and get the results.

I’ve come to realize that uncertainty, risk of loss and discomfort are necessary if you want to fully experience and embrace life. In many ways, uncertainty makes you come alive – there’s electricity to it (and a clenchy-ness at the same time!!) It’s like riding a rollercoaster!

The more you lean into uncertainty the more resilient you become. You become certain about uncertainty! It has a pattern and you can develop an internal process to work through it.

Allowing this experience opens space for new things to form and take shape. The feeling of uncertainty ebbs and flows, like a tide, as you keep moving forward. As you take each step towards your goal, the more certain things become.

After all, certainty has a level of boredom to it. If everything were certain, life would be pretty dull. Certainty is not a real concept; it deludes us into believing that it’s the safer route and stifles innovation, creativity and the chance to create something quite brilliant and unique.

Scared IS the new black!

Look for pockets of uncertainty in your life and begin to walk towards them, rather than running away in fear. These little pockets are where you actually get to live your life and be the person you really came here to be. Embrace fear and doubt by leaning into uncertainty and working through it.

Start to look at uncertainty as a place of unknown possibilities.

Re-frame your doubt and hesitancy and chase those opportunities. Take a leap of faith and follow your dream!

 

 

Six ways to stop resistance kicking your butt…

Resistance is a challenge for everyone from time to time.

I’ve helped my clients work through resistance when it has created self-doubt, procrastination, fear, low self-esteem and even self-sabotage in their business, projects or home life.

Resistance is a powerful nasty beasty!

I have been on the receiving end of it many times in my own life.

Resistance can kill your goals and dreams and destroy your confidence all at the same time.

It’s a powerful enemy within that feeds off your Lizard brain – that niggling voice in your head that says: “Do it tomorrow instead.” Or “Who do you think you are?!”  It turns positive momentum and hope into stone.

 

The truth is that EVERYONE has THAT voice in his or her head in the same way that everyone breathes. It’s natural and part of your human defenses. But that doesn’t mean it’s always right!

Resistance holds you back, throws you off course and won’t let go until it takes your ideas and goals and destroys them – you give up.

Perhaps you’ve started a business or you’re working on a project…

You get into a rhythm when good things are happening. You achieve momentum and everything flows. It’s like the Universe is pulling everything together and things are moving at a fast pace. There’s a quickening as things unfold for you.

…Then you hit the wall. Something happens or goes wrong. You lose confidence, despite being two-thirds through the project and the end was almost in sight. You’ve invested so much in time, energy and not to mention money, then it all feels like it’s slipping away from you.

Panic sets in as the tide turns, you feel out of control and can’t stop it. Your confidence drains away as the voice in your head returns to tell you that you’re not cut out for this and you’re the biggest loser in town.

Suddenly failure becomes an option and you’re scared. What was fun now feels very dark.

You can’t negotiate or reason with resistance because your inner Lizard is working overtime.

Resistance isn’t the end – though sometimes it can feel like it! Resistance is just testing your resolve. It’s part of the process. You can get through to the other side.

Here’s how:

1. Recognise your enemy – Resistance is self-created. It’s noisy and feels real but it’s not the big monster you might perceive it to be. Recognising this is extremely important.  YOU always have the power of free will. You can override your resistance at any time by taking conscious action. You get to choose whether you stay stuck or not.

2. Reconnect to your WHY – Your passion is like an antidote. It can de-solve any fear associated with your resistance. Reconnect to your passion and draw energy from it by answering the following two questions and use these as your touchstones as you’re working through:

WHY do I want to do this?

How badly do I want to succeed?

3. Remember it’s just part of the process Resistance is just part of the journey: First you have an idea – then you have resistance – then you create a system or process to work through it and take consistent action.

4. Get help Fight resistance with assistance! Help yourself by setting up a daily ritual or system that gets you into the habit of showing up and taking action. Create affirmations or goal cards and look at them regularly to visualize success. Sometimes it feels harder because you feel alone. Enlist help from others who have experienced what you’re experiencing now. They can guide you through.

5. Accept that things go wrong – You can’t always prepare for it but shit happens! Sometimes things don’t work. There’s a difference between quitting and feeling like quitting. Failure means that we have to grow – it’s all about learning. You’re compelled to figure it out. You are presented with the raw materials for your solution. Work the problem to create your solution.

6. Hang in there Completing is not for the faint hearted. Yes it takes hard work and stamina to finish. There might be many obstacles along the way. But all the hard work is for nothing if you don’t show up to finish. This sometimes requires extra energy and drive to see it through and it’s the most difficult bit – but it’s worth it! Sometimes you have to reach in for that extra bit of courage.

Resistance invisibly thrives when self-sabotage, self-doubt, low confidence, procrastination, and fear takes hold. The more important your call to action, the greater the sense of resistance you’ll feel. It’s a natural part of life. You can hide from it and hope it goes away, or consciously work through it.

You ALWAYS have a choice…

 

5 Things To Do the Next Time You Feel Like Quitting!

Sometimes I feel like quitting!

The last time was a few weeks ago after my cat died suddenly. I’ve had three deaths in the last six months and was getting sick to death of death! I’d reached the “WTF!” stage. I felt like giving it all up throwing my laptop away and getting a job in a tea shop. I could happily spend my days serving cups of tea and chatting to customers. Blissfully avoiding any responsibility!

How many times have you felt like giving up, throwing the towel in and running away to start a new life or career?

Monthly?

Weekly?

Daily?!

Life isn’t always easy. There are times when things get difficult and we struggle with loss, uncertainty and doubt.

Quitting is always an option especially you’re faced with what seem like impossible challenges.

Here’s the thing…

There is a difference between TALKING about quitting and ACTUALLY quitting…

One involves THOUGHT the other ACTION.

The truth is that EVERYONE FEELS like giving up at some point. We all hit a roadblock that’s hard to get around:

  • You’re scared to begin because you might fail
  • You’re riddled with uncertainty and doubt – Especially when things become murky or unclear.
  • You’re questioning whether you were really cut out for this after all?
  • You’re feeling like a dumb-ass for giving up your well paid job to go it alone and now no one’s knocking at your door for your services!
  • You’re repeatedly asking yourself WTF am I doing?!
  • You have more excuses for not carrying on than reasons for carrying on
  • You’re questioning the answers the Universe appears to be showing you just now!

Fear and doubt are dream killers and in moments of uncertainty it’s easy to allow them to erode our confidence and win-out. We want assurances on how things are going to turn out and when these aren’t available we become uncomfortable with taking action. We hesitate our energy drains away and up pop the excuses. Avoidance strategies kick in and we skulk back to hide in our comfort zone, waiting for either divine intervention or for someone else to save us!

We stop being successful…

This lack of energy towards your goal reinforces the limiting beliefs that “I’m not cut out for this…” and you become locked into a lack-mindset.

These are the defining moments that make us question and challenge ourselves. You have a choice between Getting Out and Going Deeper in.

Here’s what to do when you feel like quitting:

1. Take responsibility. Let go of any excuses and accept where you are right now. You might not be able to influence what has happened in the past, but you can influence the present and shape future outcomes. Stop blaming others, the recession or the moon being in retrograde! Dust yourself off and get back in the saddle.

2. Get in touch with your passion. Re-align to your dream. WHY do you want to do this? Re-ignite the flame burning deep within you. You CAN do this but ONLY if you REALLY WANT to. Take time to re-connect and renew your energy. Get giddy about your intention!

3. Get out of your own way. Recognise the voices in your head as naysayers who are not real! Change your thinking because it will change your results. Check the quality of your inner dialogue and only allow space for positive language. Create goal cards or affirmation statements to re-focus your attention. Use the problem as raw materials for the solution. Instead of asking: Can I really do this? Ask “How can I do this?”

4. Be disciplined. An idea will ALWAYS remain just an idea unless you create systems and habits that enable you to take deliberate action. Plan your next step and take conscious step by step action to make it happen. Create systems to help you show up and be 100% present and committed.

5. Get some help. Having a coach as a sounding board and mirror to reflect back your behaviour really helps you to blast through any roadblocks and challenges. Having someone on your side makes ALL the difference and stops you feeling isolated and alone.

The grief that I was going through wasn’t a mistake I was on the verge of huge transformation. Grief, silence, emptiness is a gift AND it’s the hardest thing to go through, especially when you just want to run away. I was working through my deepest fear – Loss.

What I realised was that there is NO GETTING OUT, I had to walk DEEPER IN. Loss wasn’t the enemy I was being broken open for transformation. I felt vulnerable and uncomfortable but getting out wasn’t an option. Grief has a way of peeling back the bullshit and getting you closer to the core of who you are. As you let go and things fall away a new deeper level emerges.

Grow into your challenges by Going Deeper into the uncertainly and the unknown. The solutions for success are waiting to be found as you to connect deeper to your authentic self.
