Are You Creating a Neighborhood that’s Bad for Self-Leadership?

When it comes to really ramping up your self-leadership skills and creating success and abundance, it all starts with self-care. This is easy if you’re already health conscious.

However, if you (and your health) are not high on your priority list, the stresses of running a business (especially if you are a solopreneur) or climbing the  corporate ladder  increase the likelihood of  making bad choices when it comes nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, and other health habits.

This creates a vicious cycle. A lack of time and energy to devote to creating a healthy you leads to fatigue and other symptoms of bad health, making it all the more difficult to ‘find’ the time and energy to devote to yourself. You get nowhere.

And before you know it, your body, with its toxic load of stress, bad food and flabby muscles has become a “bad neighborhood” for leading anything!  

Here’s the thing. Your body is a complex network of systems. When one part of the system (say, hormones) goes off track, it ALL goes off track. Ignoring a glitch in your system won’t make things better and could ultimately lead to a roaring case of burn out or a chronic illness.

No thanks to that.

So what’s a busy, up-and-coming professional to do?

1.  Make Your Health a Priority

In order to create balance and move towards a better lifestyle, your health should be one of your top 3 priorities in life. If it’s not, both you and your business could potentially suffer the consequences of living in a bad neighborhood. Don’t take your health for granted. Give yourself the gift of a conscious commitment to creating the healthiest you possible!

2.  Create Systems and Habits to Support You

Implementing healthy strategies requires balance and in order to have balance, you need routine. Entrepreneurs often struggle with creating and maintaining structure in their daily lives because they’re frequently pulled in many directions.

We all know that infants and young children thrive on routine and structure. So why not apply this principle to ourselves?  Here are several great places to start:

  • Get up and go to bed at the same time every day (even weekends). Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep. This allows your body to repair itself and keeps WEIGHT GAIN away!
  • Eat on a regular schedule. This goes a long way toward keeping your cortisol (stress hormone) levels in check.
  • Schedule exercise time just as you would any meeting.
  • Take frequent breaks from work. Sitting all day actually takes years off your life!

3.  Do Your Genius Work (and Let Your Team do Theirs)

One of the biggest obstacles for entrepreneurs and leaders is knowing when to let go. The truth is, we all have just 24 hours in a day. You can’t be good at everything, so surround yourself with people who are GREAT at the things that aren’t your genius work. Focus on things only you can do and delegate the rest. This will free up time for you to take care of yourself. 

4.  Clean Up Your Stress Mess

Most people have some degree of stress in their lives. But for some, it can be chronic and persistent. This situation is like having a gang of thugs hanging out on the corner in your neighborhood. Cortisol is the ringleader of the rogue band of bad-girls (and boys) and plays havoc with your sleep, your weight and long-term damage to every organ system in your body. It’s not a pretty sight.

Leaders and entrepreneurs are highly susceptible to chronic persistent stress, mainly because they often fail to establish clear boundaries around the demands of business. With a 9-to-5 job, it’s much easier to leave your work at the workplace, but not so simple if you‘re in charge. Again, structure and routine are key elements to a healthier lifestyle. Set boundaries for yourself and those around you. Learn when to say ‘no’ to the demands and requests of others. If you work from home, set boundaries around where you work in the house. Don’t let work bleed into every part of your home or you’ll never be able to “leave it”.

5.  Have a Clear  Plan                        

Focusing on one area of healthy living is better than nothing, but creating good long-term health outcomes requires attention to the whole person – mind, body, and spirit. Try applying the same core principles to your health as you would to your business and structure your ‘plan for a healthier you’ like a business plan: identify your desired outcome, set reasonable goals and establish a clear path to achieve success. And if you find it’s too tough to go it alone, consider finding an accountability partner or hiring a coach to help you get started.

Creating new habits takes time and a willingness to commit to consistency. This where being a good self-leader is so important. The key to success is taking baby steps and giving yourself permission to be imperfect. No one gets it right all the time!

The payoff for committing to radical self-care is huge. When you create a “good neighborhood” by maximizing your health and energy levels, you’re then able to really focus on what you’re wanting in your career or business and go farther faster!
